A massive cargo ship moves through the Columbia River, the Northwest's busiest and most profitable waterway. The Columbia Bar (where the river meets the Pacific Ocean) was colonized by Thomas Jefferson under the supervision of entrepreneur John Jacob Astor in 1810. Pioneers on the Oregon Trail rafted their entire life's belongings down the raging river. To this day, the Columbia River remains an integral piece in the Northwest's economy.
