Photo: Mount St. Helens Anniversary

Mount St. Helens, which rises midway between Portland and Seattle, erupted on May 18, 1980. The ash from the mountain blackened the sky of nearby cities and eventually circumnavigated the world. The formerly pointed peak now adds a rounded silhouette to the horizon. On clear days, the peak appears on the horizon from more than 60 miles away. Each summer, when the snow melts, adventurers summit its peak and submerge themselves into the subterranean lava tube tunnels.
