Below the Roman Colosseum

The Roman Colosseum stands as a testimony to Roman architecture and entertainment, no matter how brutal its history may be. Beneath the Colosseum's original floor ran a network of tunnels used to navigate fighting slaves and gladiators to their posts before battles that took place in front of tens of thousands of fans. Tigers scurried through the tunnels and were hoisted on elevators to the floor above. In-seat fans never saw the Colosseum's inner workings, but they thrived on the bloodshed that it produced.
