Portland's Japanese Garden Contrasts Bustling City

Just outside of downtown Portland, Ore., the Japanese Garden offers peace and tranquility to the weary city traveler. Allocate a solid part of your afternoon and stroll through the immaculately sculpted garden that has been shaped in true Japanese style.

On clear days, wanderers can see Mount Hood shimmer on the horizon. Below the mountain peak, Portland's tallest buildings stand in stark contrast to the natural beauty of the garden.

The Japanese Garden rests in the middle of Washington Park, a massive urban nature area within Portland city limits. For ten dollars, travelers can wander through the garden from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. (Winter hours are shorter, but the garden is still open).
