The Perfect Fly Fishing Rod for Backpacking

When we’re backpacking through our favorite Rocky Mountain trail, we often come across crystal clear streams that swarm with trout. We wish we had a two-foot-long fishing pole that would fit neatly in our pack without adding too much weight so that we could stop and catch dinner (or, simply pass some idle time by testing our skills against the Rockies).

With no luck finding the perfect backpacking fishing pole, we at The Adventure Tribune almost gave up, until we discovered Tenkara USA.

What Is Tenkara USA?

Tenkara USA is a Colorado-based fly fishing company that creates rods that can condense under two feet. The company's rods are lightweight and pack into a sturdy, backpack-friendly case.

Their Sato rod extends to over 12 feet in length, but it condenses telescopically until it’s under two feet long (seriously). The set comes with a durable-yet-lightweight case that fits neatly into even the smallest of backpacking gear. And, it only adds a mere two pounds to the pack.

Tenkara’s History: A Japanese Tradition

Though Tenkara USA as a company is only seven years old, the method of Tenkara fishing has been around for centuries in Japan. This ancient fishing method is ridiculously simple, as expressed in the company’s motto: only a rod, line and fly.

The method of Tenkara fly fishing is this: tie a line to the rod tip, tie a fly to the line, and fish. No reels. No complicated fly selection. Just simple, easy, and effective fishing.

The entire setup took us about two minutes (though with experience, we’re told we can make this a 40-second process).

In Conclusion...A Cool Video

So, if you’re planning on taking a fishing rod with you on your next backpacking adventure, make it a rod from Tenkara USA. The company, based in Colorado, guarantees their product and provides ample how-to videos that make even the novice fly fisher feel comfortable with the process.

More to come about our first-hand experiences with our Sato rod from Tenkara USA. In the meantime, check out their video about the Tenkara fishing tradition, and then check out Tenkara USA’s website to see their gear.
