Here are 12 of the most epic adventure characters that lead the way in some of the coolest adventure movies out there.

We love adventure movies. They have the ability to transport us to other places, times, and worlds. They also have the ability to transform our definitions of adventure and inspire us to pursue adventure like never before.

One key to a quality adventure movie is the character. Without a bold, daring adventurer leading the journey, the adventure itself may never even occur.

Here are 12 of our favorite adventure characters that lead the screen in some of the coolest adventure movies out there.

1. Indiana Jones
Genius archaeology professor by day, and tomb-investigating, treasure-hunting, Nazi-fighting, world traveler by night (and weekends), Dr. Jones inspires all of his fans to get off the couch and explore the world. He takes us to Egypt, Nepal, India, South America, China, and Europe where he uses his intellect and courage to find the world’s coolest treasures so they can be studied rather than in the hands of bad guys.

2. James Bond
This suave super-spy leads over 25 film adventures across the globe throughout the 007 series. He brings the audience with him into the shady underworld of international crime across countless countries that span over six decades.

And she does this all while keeping her egotistic demi-god companion in check.

4. Captain Jack Sparrow

5. Frodo Baggins
This meek hobbit leads one of the greatest adventures in fiction through the Lord of the Rings series. In the process, he braves giants, wizards, gremlin-things, and battles, yet keeps his main goal in mind.

6. Lara Croft
Heir to a massive fortune, Lara Croft spends her time adventuring to exotic locations to find the contents of lost tombs, hence her nickname: Tomb Raider. She faces evil competitors, mystical powers, and imminent doom every time she goes exploring.

7. Katniss Everdeen

8. Han Solo
This intergalactic smuggler has a shady past, complete with spaceship racing and black market dealing with the galaxy’s underground. Eventually, he gets wrapped up fighting for the rebels against the Empire in Star Wars.

In The Life of Pi, the title character leaves home and sails the world with a tiger on a life raft. Along this adventure, Pi exhibits courage and a drive to keep searching as he explores the far reaches of the earth.

10. Walter Mitty
The seemingly boring character in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is actually the most interesting man in the world. His unplanned adventures take this cautious individual to exotic locations where he experiences crazy adventures and accomplishes daring feats of courage.

11. Harry Potter
The literary legend also made an adventurous impact on the big screen. As a young man, he took on the most feared wizard in history and traveled throughout the wizarding world to become one of the most experienced individuals in magic.
